Octopus Project VIII: Free

Octopus Project VIII: FREE
A Social Art Experiment
May 23 – 24 (part of Doors Open Toronto)
Opening Saturday May 23 (time to be announced)
* PLEASE READ CAREFULLY, THIS SHOW WILL BE DIFFERENT THAN OUR PREVIOUS EXHIBITS *

For the eighth installment of the Octopus Project show, we have chosen to examine the idea of free as the theme for the exhibition. Inspired by the theme, we are asking that the artwork submitted by artist not be put for sale, but instead be offered for free.

Art submissions are to be created based not only on the theme of free but also with the idea in mind that someone will receive the work for free/as a gift. Those who choose the piece will then be asked to send back to the artist a note or letter sharing a part of themselves or a response to the work. We hope that this exhibit will not only examine what free means to artists, but will also promote a spirit of generosity and potential for forming connections between people through creativity. We are curious to find out what happens when art is separated from commerce, what this might change within the social interaction with artwork, as well as in the process of art-making itself.
